Easy-to-read language is an important tool for breaking down barriers and ensuring that everyone has access to information. Easy-to-read language is mandatory for public sector websites. It plays a particularly central role in government agencies, as it helps various target groups with communication challenges to understand important information.

Our TYPO3 + AI // PLAIN LANGUAGE extension enables content within TYPO3 to be converted into plain language using AI. The tool we developed is based on the Mistral AI. We deliberately chose Mistral as our AI solution because its European server locations ensure compliance with GDPR requirements. 

With the new TYPO3 extension, a “Plain Language” content branch is created within your website—without requiring you to have your content converted by a specialized agency and without having to manually copy and paste it into the website afterward. All you need to do is: Check the “Easy Language” content for accuracy. Once that’s done, you’ll be in compliance with the requirements of the Accessibility Enhancement Act (BFSG).

§ Legal Basis

Regulation on the Creation of Accessible Information Technology Pursuant to the Act on Equal Treatment of Persons with Disabilities (Accessible Information Technology Regulation—BITV 2.0)

Section 4: Explanations in German Sign Language and Plain Language

The homepage of a public body’s website must provide the following explanations in German Sign Language and Plain Language in accordance with Annex 2:

1. Information on the main content,
2. Navigation instructions,
3. An explanation of the main content of the accessibility statement,
4. References to additional information available on this website in German Sign Language and in plain language.

The BITV 2.0 requires public bodies to provide accessible digital services—including websites, mobile applications, electronically supported administrative processes, and graphical user interfaces. This also includes the provision of information in plain language and German Sign Language, as regulated in Section 4 of the BITV 2.0.
